Introduction
Islam

The meaning of Islam is to submit oneself completely to the will of Allah - Almighty God; to follow the path as ordained by Allah and to act according to the precept of Allah. Islam also signifies peace, fraternity and the correct understanding of the entire universe. Islam is a religion which can be followed easily by everyone, everywhere, in the day to day life. (Introduction to Islam page 1)
Holy Qur’an
The Holy Quran is the last revelation of Almighty Allah. The Qur’an testifies and includes in it the contents of the previous Holy Books revealed to Prophets Moses, Prophet David, and Prophet Jesus.
Muslims
And those who follow Islam are called Muslims. Muslim believes in all the Prophets of God; from Adam to Muhammad, and also believes in the Holy Books viz:, 1)Torait (Torah) revealed to Prophet Musa (Moses), 2) Zaboor revealed to Prophet Dawood (David), 3) Injeel or New Testament revealed to Prophet Isa (Jesus) and 4) Qur’an revealed to Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.).
The followers of Islam are known as Muslim; one who believes in the following principles is a Muslim.
1. Oneness of God, Allah.
2. Muhammad as Messenger of Allah and last Prophet and seal of all Prophets sent by Allah. (After Prophet Muhammad(p.u.h.&h.p.) there will be no Prophets or messengers sent to the society or people.) Thus the duty of guiding the society has been granted to 12 Imams the descendents of Prophet Muhammd (p.u.h.&h.p.).
3. The Day of Judgement or Qiyamat, and believing in Hell and Heaven.

Shi’a Muslims
The word Shi’a, as the follower Leader of believers Imam Ali son of Abi Talib and his descendents have been known in different words. Shi’ites, Shi’i, Imami, Ja’fari Sects, Shi’a Ithna Asheri (The follower of Twelver Imams) etc. all has same meaning. In this book Shi’ites has been mentioned as Shi’a.
Shi’a means to follow, the world Shi’a is a Quranic word that was used for the follower of Prophet Musa and follower of Prophet Ibrahim. Today the Shi’a is commonly used for the person expressing his devotion and attachment to Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.)and his Family members (Ahlul Bayt). The family is strictly for Ali son of Abi Talib, Prophet’s daughter Fatima, Hassan son of Ali, Hussain son of Ali and their descendants, the Imams.
According to Dr.Mohammad Ali Shomali in his book ‘Discovering Shi’i Islam’ who quotes from Shahrestani (d.548 A.H) in his Al-Milal wa al Nihal, an outstanding source about different sects of Islam, writes “The Shi’a are those who followed Ali (son of Abi Talib- the cousin of Prophet Muhammad) in particular and believed in his Imamate and caliphate according to the explicit teachings and will of the Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.)” (Sharastani, Vol.1.p.146)
There are hundreds of Hadiths (Sayings of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w.) in his life time emphasizing, praising and blessing Ali son of Abi Talib and his followers in different ways. Ali was the best amongst all companions of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. in the eyes of Prophet.
One of many Hadiths (Sayings of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w.) Ibn al-Athir (d.606) addressing Ali, the Prophet said:
‘O Ali! You and your Shi’a will reach God being pleased with Him and well pleasing Him, and your enemies will reach Him,

being angry and will be seized by their necks. Then the Prophet demonstrated how this would be by putting his hand his neek.’ (Ibn al-Athir, the entry “qama-ha”)
The word Shi’a for the followers and friends of Ali son of Abi Talib started since the life time of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. But after the election of Caliph Abubakar by 10 persons in Saqifa, and after Muawiyas open enmity towards Ali son of Abi Talib and members of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w., and Yazid’s war against the family of Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.)and few devoted Shia in the battle of Kerbala. The Muslims were divided in groups. Since those days, follower of Ali son of Abi Talib and his descendents are known as Shi’a.

Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.)in many occasions in his life time advised Muslims to follow Ali son of Abu Talib. Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h.&h.p.)also said mine and Ali’s position is like Moses and Aron, but there will be no Prophets after me. In other sayings, I am the city of knowledge and its gate is Ali son of Abu Talib.

Shi’a Muslims follow strictly the advice of Prophet Muhammad(p.u.h.&h.p.)and his Sunnah (Authentic Sayings).
There are many Hadith and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (p.u.h and h.p.)from both Shi’a and Sunni resources, that it is compulsory for all Muslims to follow Ali son of Abi Talib and his descendents as mentioned above.

This book in your hand is good for both Muslims and Non Muslims.
